Higuey is the largest city in the province of La Altagracia, better known for its Punta Cana and Bavaro beach and hotel stretch.
Half an hour west of the beaches, Higuey is the support city where what you cannot buy in Punta Cana can be had, and many times at better prices.
Shops in town cater primarily to the Dominicans who work in the nearby hotels but return at night to their home town.
The main draw of the town is the Basilica de la Altagracia, the church that honors the patron saint of Dominicans. The country's faithful pay homage to the Virgin on 21 January. There is also the traditional celebrations in name of the Virgin Mary, with the dedication of the bulls that ride into town with the best horse riders for events from 14-16 August every year.
